Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Qiang met with German Chancellor Friedrich Metz on Wednesday, Feb. 25, in Beijing, during a routine state visit. It has been agreed that the 120 Airbus aircraft China ordered are underway.

China’s current aircraft situation

As part of China’s plan to modernise and further develop the aviation sector, the Chinese central government typically orders aircraft from Airbus and Boeing in large quantities before distributing them among its state-owned carriers. These include Air China, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines.

A total of up to 120 aircraft have been purchased from European aviation giant Airbus. Air China has placed orders for 60 A321-200Ns and 30 A320-200Ns, Spring Airlines for 30 A320neo Family, and Juneyao Air for 25 of the same aircraft type.

Conclusions of the meeting

According to Friedrich Merz, the meeting proved fruitful, as it strengthened ties between his country and Asia’s leading economy:

“The Chinese leadership will be ordering a larger number of additional aircraft from Airbus. The total order will include up to 120 additional aircraft, demonstrating how worthwhile such trips can be.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed:

“The more turbulent and complex the world becomes, the more China and Germany should strengthen strategic communication and enhance strategic mutual trust,” he said.

The deal for 120 Airbus aircraft underscores the growing economic dimension of the relationship between China and Germany, even as political dynamics continue to evolve. With Chinese President Xi Jinping strengthening trade ties and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz navigating Europe’s broader strategic interests, the agreement signals both cooperation and careful diplomacy.
