Lufthansa is expanding its use of real-time turbulence data through an industry program. The “International Air Transport Association (IATA) Turbulence Aware” program is designed to improve flight safety and aircraft efficiency across participating airlines.

Real-Time Data Shared Across Aircraft Networks

Through the IATA program, Lufthansa will collect anonymised turbulence data from the aircraft of other participating carriers. Other cooperating airlines include, SWISS Air, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Edelweiss Air. The system gathers information from onboard sensors that measure turbulence intensity and then transmit it to a centralised database.

Pilots can access the data directly on cockpit displays. Through colour-coded indicators crew will be shown the location, altitude and timing alongside the severity of turbulence. This provides a clearer picture than traditional weather forecasts.

Thousands of aircraft travelling worldwide will contribute measurements to improve data accuracy in real time. Officials describe this approach as “swarm intelligence”. Additionally, the system allows crews to adjust flight paths more precisely, according to Lufthansa. This will permit cabin teams to restructure flight paths or pause them when necessary.

Francesco Sciortino, hub manager at Frankfurt Airport said:

“Lufthansa will collect anonymised data on turbulence from flights operated by participating airlines… Lufthansa is making a significant contribution to improving the quality of data available to airlines worldwide.”

Enhancing Weather Prediction

Other than cockpit use, turbulence measurements recorded by Lufthansa flights will be shared with the German Weather Service (GWS). This data is essential in refining and calibrating forecasting models. Together, this collaboration aspires to improve long-term weather prediction accuracy.

The airline said involvement in the program highlights its commitment to not only innovation, but most importantly, safety. Through involvement the carrier aims to support industry-wide cooperation that improves reliability. Overall, reducing disruptions and contributing to a more comfortable journey for travellers.
