Solomon Islands opposition leader Matthew Wale has called for an independent audit of Solomon Airlines following a “serious sustainability crisis.” He warned the public that the state-owned carrier is facing mounting financial pressure.

A Call for Accountability and Clearer Government Policy
Wale said recent comments from interim leadership acknowledging operational strain highlights an overall theme of structural challenges within the airline. He pointed to the ongoing losses on certain routes as a major factor. Further noting pressure on revenue streams and growing competition as secondary factors that require scrutiny.
Wale said:
“If certain routes are deemed socially necessary, government must clearly state the cost of these obligations and how they are to be funded.”
Additionally, Wale denounced the countries lack of clear national aviation strategy. His concern is that officials appear to rely on short-term financial support rather than long-term reforms.
Altogether, Wale wants the government to present a detailed operational report to parliament in order to establish measurable performance targets. In his view, sustainable progress will be marked by fleet investments and route developments, alongside stronger commercial partnerships.

New Chief Executive Takes the Helm
In late January this year, it was announced that Matthew Findlay would take over as CEO from Feb. 16, 2026. He succeeded Paul Abbot who served as interim CEO after a leadership transition in mid 2025. Chairman Frank Wickham recently acknowledged that the airline was operating in a particularly challenging climate. Abbot currently remains to assist during the transition. As new leadership emerges, scrutiny on structural reforms and clearer policy direction is heightened.
The airline operates a seven-aircraft fleet — including two Airbus A320-200 jets, four DHC-6-300 turboprops and one DHC-8-100 — serving 29 destinations across six countries.
