Vienna Airport suspended its operations on Feb. 20 following a heavy snowfall. After suspending flights for three hours, the airport started its operations up again around midnight, but it is still facing delays.
Heavy snowfall at the Airport
The airport posted on its Facebook account about the bleak weather conditions. According to the post, approximately 20 cm of fresh snow fell at the airport on Feb. 20.
They also mentioned that their winter maintenance crew had been working to remove the snow since the evening of Feb. 20 and they had removed 1,000 truckloads of snow, totalling around 15,000 tons.
An airport spokesperson said:
“Since yesterday evening, winter maintenance crews at Vienna Airport have been working around the clock. More than 200 employees are operating over 100 specialized vehicles to keep runways, taxiways, the apron, and traffic areas operational.”
Passengers were informed of about the delays and restrictions because of heavy snowfall by the airport on their website.

Vienna Airport suspended its operations after experiencing extreme snowfall and their staff took time to clear the runways, taxiways and the apron.
As per Reuters, the operations were suspended for three hours on Feb. 20 which resulted in both cancellation and diversion of flights.
Due to the weather conditions, the affected airlines were Ryanair, Austrian Airlines, Air France, Iberia, Condor and Ethiopian Airlines.
The airport resumed its operations at midnight but are still facing delays and will take some time to be back to normal, as per the airport spokesperson.
