Indian budget carrier SpiceJet has launched a new international route connecting Ahmedabad and Sharjah, expanding its Middle East network and strengthening air links between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The inaugural flight took off on Friday, Feb. 6, marking a significant milestone for both the airline and Sharjah Airport.

Five Weekly Flights to Boost Connectivity

The launch ceremony was attended by officials from Sharjah Airport Authority, SpiceJet Airlines and the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, highlighting the importance of the new service for tourism and trade.

The Ahmedabad–Sharjah route will operate five flights per week, offering passengers more flexibility and competitive travel options. The service links Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) with Sharjah International Airport (SHJ), catering to both leisure and business travellers.

Sharjah Airport confirmed the launch on social media, noting that the route would enhance travel convenience and strengthen aviation ties between the two countries. The airline aims to attract Indian expatriates, tourists and traders who frequently travel between Gujarat and the Gulf region.

Growing Demand for India–UAE Travel

Officials said the new service reinforces Sharjah’s position as a key regional aviation hub, especially for South Asian markets. India remains one of the airport’s largest and fastest-growing passenger markets, with strong demand driven by tourism, labour mobility and bilateral trade.

The UAE and India share deep economic and cultural ties, and new air routes are seen as crucial for sustaining this relationship. Sharjah has been expanding its route network to accommodate rising passenger numbers and to compete with other Gulf hubs such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Industry analysts say the launch reflects a broader trend of increasing air connectivity between India and the Gulf. With Gujarat emerging as a major business and diaspora hub, direct flights to Sharjah are expected to see strong demand, particularly from migrant workers and family travellers.
