Minor injuries at the scene

The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) confirmed the crash. It happened at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 23. A vehicle drove through the entrance of the McNamara Terminal, where it struck a Delta Air Lines ticket counter.

The McNamara Terminal is Delta Air Lines’ primary hub at Detroit’s airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States and a major gateway for international travel.

Airport first responders treated six people, whose injuries were reportedly not life-threatening. Delta Air Lines said three employees were checked after encountering debris, and all were well.

Security responded within seconds. “The response was so quick, thank God, with the cops and TSA,” said traveller Ali Khalifa. Videos online show a man in a Detroit Lions jersey being detained by officers.

Police investigation underway

The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) is now investigating the incident, with officials saying the cause of the crash is still unknown. They added that the driver responsible is in custody and that a K-9 unit searched the car and found nothing concerning.

Airport operations continued normally throughout the day. Delta Air Lines confirmed its flight schedule was not affected.
