Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) welcomes its first commercial flight after seven years of construction, marking the opening phase of the airport’s is larger Master Plan 2025-2045.

WSI Opens for Passengers

Jetstar flight JQ362 will be the first commercial service flying out of WSI to Gold Coast Airport (OOL) on Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. AEDT. Captain Aglaya Papadokokolakis will be the first to fly the sold-out flight. This will be the first departure from a major new Australian airport in over 50 years.

The return service will arrive from OOL back to WSI at 3 p.m. AEDT, followed by a flight to Melbourne Airport (MEL) at 6 p.m. AEDT.

WSI is located 45 kilometres from Sydney CBD and 18 kilometres from the Penrith city centre and will operate 24/7, unlike the Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD).

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said:

“This is not just Sydney’s second airport, this is not even Western Sydney’s best airport, new airport; this is Australia best airport without question.”

The Future for WSI

WSI began freight operations in July 2026. Its master plan forecasts nearly 300,000 tonnes of cargo moving through the airport by 2030, positioning it as both  a freight gateway and a passenger hub.

Published in May, the Master Plan 2025-2045 outlines the airport’s long-term development, including plans to generate 8,500 precinct jobs and the ability to handle 10 million annual passengers in the 2030s. The plan also proposes additional terminals, a second runway and  an eventual capacity of 82 million passenger by the 2060s.

WSI CEO Simon Hickey, said:

“What I can say is that in just over 12 months from now … we’ll have over 250 destinations that people can connect to.”
