Flight Cancellations: Consequences of International Dispute

The diplomatic dispute between the countries of Taiwan and China has escalated since the remarks of newly appointed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takauchi, as she declared that if there were a Chinese attack on Taiwan, it would justify the deployment of her country’s self-defence forces. These declarations are not shared amongst her government or her people, and she has caused a significant uproar.

Since this declaration, between November 15 and 17, 2025, an estimated 500,000 flight tickets to Japan have been cancelled, marking the largest disruption in Sino-Japanese air travel since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. At least seven Chinese airlines are offering free cancellations to passengers, including Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, and Hainan, which have been widely understood to be connected to the escalating political tensions. Sichuan Airlines has suspended all flights between Chengdu and Chitose Airport, whilst others like budget carrier Spring Airlines have halted multiple routes to Japan.

A representative at a major Chinese travel agency, who has asked to remain anonymous, said:

We follow policies and guidance from relevant authorities. Given the current tensions in China-Japan relations, we are not recommending travel to Japan … For customers who booked earlier, we are still arranging their trips, but if the situation escalates, refunds may be negotiated between the agency and travelers.

The political climate is much more than a circumstance where sides should be chosen. It has raised questions as to the independence of Taiwan, China’s expansive goals to form ‘One China, Japan’s concern for growing conflict, and its own defence, and additional worries as to how these disputes will impact the aviation industry.
