airBaltic’s 30th Anniversary Celebrations

30 years ago, on this day, airBaltic was first founded. The airline is celebrating this occasion with the launch of a dedicated website, where people can explore the carrier’s history. At the core of the website is the 30 Stories for 30 Years project, which shares personal experiences that highlight airBaltic’s role in travel and connection over the years.

Continuing the joviality, airBaltic also have a schedule of events and activities that will unfold over the next few weeks. The celebration will wrap up on October 1, on the date of airBaltic’s first flight from Riga to Stockholm in 1995.

Pauls Cālītis – Interim CEO of airBaltic – has commented on this milestone:

“When airBaltic was founded in 1995, Latvia had only recently regained its independence and urgently needed strong air connectivity with Europe and beyond. With just a few aircraft and a clear sense of purpose, we stepped into that role. Today, airBaltic has become the leading carrier in the Baltics – a trusted and modern airline, serving as an essential link between the region and the world. This achievement rests on the shoulders of nearly 3 000 dedicated colleagues and the trust of millions of passengers over three decades. On behalf of the team, thank you for being part of this journey.”

airBaltic: Then and Now

airBaltic was founded on 28 August 1995, established as a joint venture between the Latvian State and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). Just over a month later, the airline operated its first commercial flight from Riga to Stockholm on 1 October 1995. This service was fulfilled with a Saab SF340 aircraft, which carried 33 passengers.

Since then, airBaltic has grown to become the flag carrier of Latvia and has transported over 65 million guests on one million flights. With a fleet of 50 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, the airline offers services to over 80 global destinations, connecting the world with the Baltic region. airBaltic also has a successful pilot academy, launched in 2018.
