IndiGo has begun the construction of its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility, based in Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. The construction was initiated with a groundbreaking ceremony (Bhoomi Poojan) at Kempegowda International Airport.

Construction ceremony

There were several attendees at the ceremony some of which included the government dignitaries, Gunjan Krishna IAS, Commissioner-Industries, Government of Karnataka, Pieter Elbers, chief executive officer at IndiGo, Hari Marar, chief executive officer at Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), Isidre Porqueras, chief operating officer at IndiGo, Satyaki Raghunath, chief operating officer at BIAL and Parichay Datta, senior vice president of engineering at IndiGo.

The MRO facility will be built on 31 acres of land that was recently allocated by BIAL and is expected to be fully functional by early 2028. According to IndiGo, the facility will be three times bigger than IndiGo’s MRO facility in Delhi and Bengaluru when combined. It will have the capacity of 12 bays and the capability to handle narrow-body aircraft and wide-body aircraft. IndiGo believes the facility will prove very useful in its aspiration to become a key player in the aviation industry by 2030.

Creating opportunities

In May 2025, IndiGo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BIAL for the allocation of the land. The airline began construction of the facility in just two months after obtaining the land, demonstrating its commitment towards a self-reliant aviation ecosystem in India. The airline also believes the facility will create over a thousand jobs in the country in areas such as engineering, technical, and several other roles, further contributing to the country. Pieter Elbers said that the project strengthens IndiGo’s operational presence in Bengaluru, one of its largest bases with over 200 daily flights. Elbers said:

“We are very excited as we commence the project to build this grand MRO facility in Bengaluru.” This is also an important step towards shaping the future of Indian aviation by developing a holistic aviation ecosystem in the nation.”

Considering IndiGo’s fleet of over 400 aircraft, its dedicated MRO facilities will give the airline an advantage in repairs and reduce costs, which will benefit the airline and its customers.
