Fleet Renewal for Further Development

According to ch-aviation, Cathay currently has 49 active Boeing 777 aircraft in service. With pending orders of a total of 21 Boeing 777-9 to be delivered, the new aircraft will potentially replace ageing 777-300 and 777-300ER models with an average age of 24 and 12.9 years, respectively. Ronald Lam, the CEO of the group, sees this as a step forward to improving Cathay’s offerings:

“We plan to expand and renew our fleet with the additional 777-9 aircraft, enabling us to continue our rich history of connecting the world with our Hong Kong hub… [we aim] to further strengthen our ongoing partnership with Boeing and leverage the world-class features of the new 777-9 as we strive to become the world’s best premium airline.”

The new Boeing 777-9 has a range of 7,295 nautical miles (13,510 km), which allows Cathay to connect Hong Kong, its home hub, to all international destinations. It also reduces fuel consumption by 20% on average and noise by 20%, compared to the ageing Boeing models that it is to replace.

Cathay: Strong 2025 Ahead

Based in Hong Kong, Cathay has always been one of the world’s leading airlines. Besides fleet renewal, the company has seen strong developments in 2025 so far, with June traffic figures showing an increase compared to the previous year. The group also achieved a new milestone of having over 100 international destinations this year. With continuously improving service and connectivity, Cathay is sure to develop into one of the world’s leading aviation providers, providing world-class service and a superb travelling experience to travellers.
