N3 Engine Overhaul Services has launched the construction of a new logistics centre. The centre is fitted with a warehouse that will prove useful to the company following the demand for Rolls-Royce Trent engines.
Expanding capacity
The joint venture between Lufthansa Technik AG and Rolls-Royce plc in Arnstadt is currently increasing its capacity, preparing for the rise in demand for the overhaul of Rolls-Royce Trent engines in the long term. Stefan Landes, managing director of N3 Engine Overhaul Services, commented that with the addition of a new logistics centre, the company is creating the basis for future-oriented logistics processes at N3. He said:
“An aircraft engine consists of up to 20,000 individual parts—from modules weighing several tons to the smallest screw. And every component has to be in the right place at the right time. In order to be able to continue working efficiently with increasing capacity utilisation, we need a modern and intelligent storage system that also meets aeronautical requirements.”
Features
The new building features a loading ramp for incoming and outgoing goods, a floor storage area on the first floor, modern offices and social rooms on the first floor, changing rooms for 560 employees, and workstations for over 30 employees. At the centre of the logistics centre is a high-bay warehouse system that is 123 metres long, 29 metres wide, and 26 metres high. It allows efficient storage of large volumes of goods measuring up to four by four metres due to the dynamic height adjustment.
The warehouse is fitted with modern automation technology and intelligent IT systems that enable automated storage and retrieval, central control of all warehouse processes, and end-to-end real-time data analysis. 24 lifts with a height of 24 metres were also installed in the warehouse for storing and picking engine parts, including moving them directly to work areas. Engines that have been fully assembled will be loaded in the Customer Delivery Centre (CDC), protecting them from the weather using a crane system and forklift trucks under a canopy. In addition to storing completed engines, the CDC will also support production-related processes. The new logistic centre will begin operation in 2027.
