Kenya Airways has become the first carrier worldwide to implement the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) new Aviation Safety Culture Survey I‑ASC Light survey—an advanced tool designed to strengthen safety culture. Within the broader IATA Safety Leadership Charter, I‑ASC Light helps airlines rapidly identify and target areas for cultural improvement, enhancing risk transparency and collaborative safety efforts across all levels.

Impact of I‑ASC Light Survey Across Africa and Beyond

The initiative sets a continental precedent, inspiring action from 150 signatories to IATA’s Safety Leadership Charter while pressuring peers to follow with similar data-backed culture enhancements.

IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Al‑Awadhi, lauded the breakthrough, saying:

“The accessibility of I-ASC Light helps airline management teams quickly identify where they should focus in fostering a robust safety culture. As the global pioneer in using the new version of I-ASC, Kenya Airways is enabling concrete actions to meet their commitment to the IATA Safety Leadership Charter and to build a stronger safety culture across the airline,” said Kamil Al-Awadhi.

Allan Kilavuka, Group Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Airways, affirmed:

“Safety is our priority. It is ingrained in everything we do and is fostered through a culture of continuous improvement. This is where I-ASC Light is such a valuable tool. We were able to pinpoint key areas for improvement in a clear and structured way. During World Safety Day in April, we shared the results of the I-ASC survey across the airline, with each member of the senior management team signing their own safety charters committing to safety initiatives in the IATA Safety Leadership Charter, which we signed in 2024.”

About I-ASC Light

The I‑ASC Light is IATA’s streamlined, cost-effective version of the full I‑ASC Aviation Safety Culture Survey. Launched this year, it provides airlines with an automated tool to quickly assess nine key safety culture drivers, delivering both quantitative scores and qualitative insights—broken down by function and organisational level—to help identify areas of strength and risk. With built-in benchmarking and expert guidance, it empowers leadership to act decisively and foster meaningful improvements in safety culture, all with minimal resource commitment.
