Portugal’s national airline, TAP Air Portugal, has officially launched its new route connecting the capital city of Lisbon with Los Angeles, the home of Hollywood. To celebrate this, it held a competition with a prize of two round trip tickets to Los Angeles and two tickets to Paramount Studios.

Connecting LIS and LAX

On May 16, TAP launched the direct route between Lisbon and Los Angeles using an Airbus A330-900, which has capacity for 298 passengers. The flights started May 26 and run four times a week from Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), leaving at 09:55 (Portugal Time) and arriving at 14:40 (L.A. Time), for a total flight time of 12 hours, 45 minutes. The return flights take off from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 16:40 and arrive in Lisbon at 12:00 the next day, with a shorter duration of 11 hours, 20 minutes. Flight prices start at €679 for return journeys.

With this new route, TAP Air Portugal now flies from Lisbon to eight airports in the U.S.: New York, Newark, Boston, Miami, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Chicago and now Los Angeles. It also flies from Porto to Newark and Boston. Beginning June 3, TAP’s Tuesday flights between Lisbon and San Francisco will also make a stopover in Terceira in the Azores Islands, allowing TAP to offer direct flights from Terceira Island to California. Customers can find information and book flights on the airline’s website.

In It to Win It

TAP’s competition with a prize of two round-trip tickets to L.A. and two tickets to Paramount Studios ran until May 26. It set out to find “The next Portuguese in Hollywood” and participants were asked to recreate a scene from their favourite film or television series, using the hashtag #TAPCastingLA. The competition ran in partnership with Portuguese actor José “Zé” Condessa. Born and raised in Lisbon, he has starred in numerous Portuguese-language TV series including “Turn of the Tide” (Rabo de Peixe), available on Netflix.

TAP Air Portugal is also hosting its second Altitude Film Fest, in which budding filmmakers submit short films or documentaries of up to 30 minutes. The 10 films selected by the jury will then be added to TAP’s in-flight entertainment system for the month of October 2025, during which passengers will be able to watch and vote for the films they enjoy the most.
