WestJet, a Canadian low-cost airline, has officially joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme, reinforcing its dedication to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all passengers. The initiative is designed to assist individuals with hidden disabilities by offering them a discreet way to signal that they may need additional help, time, or understanding during their journey.

WestJet Introduces Sunflower Scheme for Hidden Disabilities

Jacqui McGillivray, Executive Vice-President and Chief People Officer at WestJet released a statement saying:

“By embracing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme, we’re deepening our commitment to accessible and considerate travel for all,”

She continues:

“The sunflower lanyard acts as a simple but effective visual cue, enabling individuals with non-visible disabilities to communicate their needs with greater ease and confidence. It’s a meaningful step towards improving their overall travel experience.”

Recognised internationally, the Sunflower scheme uses a distinctive sunflower symbol to indicate that the wearer may require extra support. Travellers can opt to wear a lanyard, badge, or wristband adorned with the symbol at airports and during WestJet flights, alerting staff to be ready with additional assistance when needed.

Paul White, CEO Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, adds to this by saying:

“We are delighted to welcome WestJet to the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network. Non-visible disabilities can be neurological, cognitive and neurodevelopmental as well as physical, visual, auditory and including sensory and processing difficulties. They can also include respiratory, heart, rare diseases and chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes and chronic pain. It is wonderful to see how WestJet have committed time and energy to implement the Sunflower training to ensure that travelling Sunflower wearers are recognised by their staff to receive the additional help, understanding and kindness they may need.”

As part of WestJet’s efforts in improving accessibility, Sunflower lanyards are now available upon request at their check-in counters across Canada. Passengers are welcome to bring their Sunflower lanyards when travelling again or visiting any place that recognises the Sunflower, so they can continue to receive the support they require.
