On Thursday April 17. 2025, a Tropic Air Cessna 208 Caravan was hijacked on its way to Belize City. The hijacker was a man wielding a knife. The local media reported an individual with injuries and blood all over their face.

The Hijacker
Belize police commissioner, Chester Williams, said the hijacker was Akinyela Taylor, a US citizen who was also a US veteran, however, this was not confirmed by US officials. The hijacking took place shortly after the Cessna 208 took off from Corozal. The flight consisted of 14 passengers and two crew members. Two of the passengers were stabbed, and the hijacker was shot by one of the wounded passengers with a licensed firearm.
The Cessna 208 circled the skies for nearly two hours in different directions before it finally landed at an airport in Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, an airport in Ladyville, Belize. The aircraft was quickly surrounded by the authorities as soon as it landed, as a full emergency had been declared when the hijacking began at 8:30 am. The passenger who shot Akinyela Taylor in the chest was rushed to the hospital along with the other passenger. He had been stabbed in the back, and the knife punctured his lungs. Maximillian Greif, the CEO of the airline company, said:
“In the face of incomprehensible pressure, our pilot acted with extraordinary courage and calm, guiding the aircraft to a safe landing. His actions were nothing short of heroic”

Hijackers Demands
The hijacker’s motives were unclear as he had made different demands. Akinyela Taylor demanded to be flown out of the country, and at one point demanded that the aircraft be landed to refuel. He also insisted on being taken back to the US. A US spokesperson in Belize said.
We don’t know why he wanted to go back to the United States.
The passenger who shot the hijacker was regarded as a hero by Chester Williams.
This was an incident that could have turned out for the worse. The plane could have crashed, which would have killed everyone on board. But luckily, everyone survived except Akinyela Taylor. A horrifying experience for the crew and passengers on board.
