Delta has announced a partnership with a popular American chain, Shake Shack. Soon, customers will be able to order a classic Shake Shack burger for their Delta flight.

I’d like a cheeseburger please.

Starting from the 1st of December, Delta’s partnership will Shake Shack will commence. Flights onward from that date will be available. However, there will be quite a few restrictions on who can pre-order a cheeseburger for their in-flight meal. Those who are flying out of Boston Logan International Airport, are in first class and on routes going further than 1,450 kilometres (900 miles) are the only customers with the option of having a cheeseburger.

The few select customers who can order the cheeseburger can do so between seven days and twenty-four hours before their flight. They can do so by placing their order through the Fy Delta app or they will receive an email before their flight informing them of the choice they have.

There are plans in 2025 to branch out this partnership to other flight routes. However, at the moment it will stay as a luxury for those flying out of Boston in first class.

So what exactly is in a Shake Shack cheeseburger? And will that be the only food Delta customers receive?

The cheeseburger customers will receive while up in the air will be exactly like a regular Shake Shack cheeseburger. The bun will be toasted, the patty 100 per cent Angus beef and with a slice of American-style cheese. Customers will also have the choice of custom zing what goes on the burger; they have the options of tomatoes, lettuce and the special ‘Shakesauce’ or they can have everything! Customers will also receive sides and a dessert to make a full meal. Included are fries, a Caesar salad and a brownie. They will also have access to Delta’s first-class drink services while they enjoy their meal.

Delta’s decision to partner up with Shake Shack comes down to their iconic cheeseburger recipe. Delta’s Managing Director of Onboard Service, Stephanie Laster, highlights this is the announcement:

“A delicious cheeseburger is an iconic comfort food – our customers know that which is why burgers are one of the top ordered menu items we offer, and we’re thrilled to elevate the offering with Shake Shack,

However, our partnership with Shake Shack goes beyond the burger. Shake Shack’s people-first culture and commitment to enriching their neighbourhoods are spot on with our own brand values of service excellence and helping the communities we serve.”

Wait, why can I get a cheeseburger on this flight?

Although this may seem like a new partnership, this collaboration is building on the relationship Delta has with Danny Meyer, founder of Shake Shack. Alongside his title of founder, Meyer is also CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG). Delta collaborated in 2013 with USHG to bring an elevated food service to their flights flying out of John F. Kennedy International Airport. Customers were able to order exclusive meals through USHG catering service and over ten years later are still able to do so.

This collaboration between Delta and Shake Shack highlights the importance Delta puts on serving high-quality food to their customers, and hopefully, by 2025 more than just their customers flying out of Boston will be able to experience this.

What are your thoughts on this collaboration? Do you think a cheeseburger is a good choice for in-flight meal service, or. If you had the choice would you have something different? Let us know what you think in the comments or on our social media!
