Malaysia Airlines has announced its refreshed and refurbished Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft.

The newly improved aircraft will debut on short-haul routes out of Kuala Lumpur International Airport by the end of this month.

The unveiling of the new Malaysia Airlines Boeing cabin

This Thursday saw Malaysia Airlines reveal its upgraded Boeing 737-800 NG cabin. The interior includes new seats, an in-flight entertainment system called MHstudio and a refurbished interior that pays homage to Malaysian identity.

The seats are ergonomically built with lightweight upholstered leather and are designed to provide passengers greater comfort. They also feature improved functionality as each seat comes with personal device holders and power outlets.

MHstudio will give travellers complete control and flexibility to stream a variety of content, from television shows, podcasts, movies, music and reading materials. Forget duty-free shopping, as MHstudio allows you to purchase items on ‘Temptations.’ ‘MHskysnacks’ allows travellers to add on in-flight snacks. These particular services will be available on selected flights in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Malaysia Airlines.

All 38 of Malaysia Airlines’ B737-800 NGs will feature the new cabins by mid-2023, following a progressive roll-out to domestic and regional destinations.

Group Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer of Malaysia Airlines, Lau Yin May, commented on the refurbishment of the carrier’s key aircraft:

“We are thrilled to roll out the newly refreshed B737-800 NG, which will deliver future travel experiences through innovative features from seats to highly customisable inflight entertainment while staying true to our roots by incorporating Malaysian elements in the overall interior cabin design.”

The refurbishment of Malaysia Airlines’ B737-800 NGs also has sustainability in mind.

Yin May commented that the new features will be reducing the weight of all 38 of the Oneworld carrier’s B737-800 NGs. Wireless in-flight entertainment, soft cabin dividers and leaner seats contribute to the airline’s ongoing sustainability efforts.

She said:

“It is becoming increasingly important that we do everything with sustainability in mind. The all-new features of our refreshed B737-800 NG fleet will reduce our carbon footprint from the reduction of the weight of each aircraft – with the much lighter seats, use of soft cabin dividers and moving away from seatback screens to offer innovative in-flight entertainment features allowing for wireless streaming on board at their convenience.”

As a result, these improvements will improve aircraft fuel burn per passenger by 8%.

The refreshed cabin also comes with a new configuration of cabin seats. There will be 12 Business Class seats on offer and 162 Economy Class seats.
