Malaysia Airlines Announced New Direct Service to Tokyo

Malaysia Airlines has announced a new service from its base Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Tokyo from 14 August of this year.

Direct route to the Electric City

The service will depart from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and land in Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and marks the flag carrier’s fourth route to Japan.

According to Malaysia Airlines, the new route will complement its existing operations to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport by allowing for more convenient and flexible itineraries.

The service will be operated twice a week using an Airbus A330-300 aircraft that’s equipped with 290 seats, 247 of which are Economy Class.

The carrier operates a total of 15 Airbus A3300-300 across its operations out of its total fleet (which is made up of 80 aircraft).

Group Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Airlines, Captain Izham Ismail, commented on the new Tokyo service and its timely nature as Japan’s international borders will reopen on 10 June and Malaysia reopened its borders in April.

Izham Ismail discussed how Malaysia Airlines’ expansion in Japan is set to enhance connectivity between the ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, made up of 10 member states of Southeast Asia) market and improve the recovery of travel in both Malaysia and Japan.

Ismail continued:

“This expansion will allow us to tap into new opportunities by operating to Asia’s third-busiest airport and the fourth-busiest airport in the world, stimulating inbound traffic to benefit Malaysian tourism and build stronger multiplier effect across the value chain of the industry.”

Malaysia Airlines clearly sees the benefits of offering various connections from Malaysia to Tokyo. Both countries are reopening their borders to international visitors and are keen to make the most of the highly anticipated busy summer season. Japan in particular has decided to stop COVID-19 arrival tests for travellers from low-risk areas and, from 1 June, will double its cap on international visitors to a promising 20,000 per day.
