Singapore Airlines has revealed what it says will be the largest double bed in commercial aviation. The feature is part of its $1.6 billion upgrade for its premium cabins and wider travel experience.

The biggest double beds to commercially fly

On Friday, Singapore Airlines showcased its new premium cabin design, featuring what they claim to be the “largest double bed in commercial aviation” in first class. Across the airline’s fleet of Airbus A350 and Boeing 777, there will be a total of 10 first-class seats, with four on the A350 and six on the 777.

The bed extends across two connecting seats, measuring 80 inches (203cm) long and 60 inches (152cm) wide, making it larger than a UK double bed. Cabin crew will prepare the bed using a mattress topper from Paradies (a German luxury bedding specialist), a duvet and pillows.

Rivals Emirates and Etihad Airways offer first-class beds measuring 82 inches (208.28 cm) in length, but neither matches the width of Singapore Airlines’ new design.

Some seats in the upgraded business class cabin can also be configured as a double bed. Other enhancements include privacy sliding doors, high-resolution screens and wines from Château Ducru-Beaucaillou and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande.

Singapore Airlines’ $1.6 Billion revamp

The cabin upgrades form part of the airline’s broader effort to regain a lead over rivals in luxury travel.

For the past seven years, Skytrax (a UK-based consultancy with an airline and airport review website) has labelled Qatar Airways as the best airline for business class, largely due to its Qsuite product that offers sliding doors and  lie-flat beds.

Brendan Sobie, an independent aviation analyst and consultant, said:

“Singapore Airlines’ rivals have been faster in terms of the upgrades to their products and more aggressive in positioning themselves at the top end of the market. Even US carriers, which were always the laggards, have upped their game and in some aspects have even higher standards.”

During the same showcase, Singapore Airlines said economy-class passengers will have additional legroom, a new storage layout for personal items, and all passengers will benefit from an upgraded in-flight entertainment system and an expanded meal service.

The upgraded cabins will enter service from the second half of 2027, with the full rollout expected to continue until 2030, the airline said.
