Virgin Atlantic have just signed a sale and leaseback agreement with AerCap Holdings N.V. for six A330-900s aircraft to be delivered between the second quarter of 2026 and the end of 2027. Under this agreement, AerCap will purchase the aircraft at delivery and lease them back to the airline for long-term operation.

Sale and Leaseback Agreement

A sale and leaseback agreement is a financial strategy where a company sells an asset (in this case, an aircraft) to an investor (AerCap) and then leases it back from the buyer. This is a very common way to raise capital and manage fleet flexibility.

The company, AerCap Holdings N.V., is the world’s largest aircraft leasing company. They provide airlines, cargo operations and other customers with long-term leases for commercial aircraft, engines and helicopters.

Headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, it serves hundreds of airlines globally and owns a massive portfolio of modern fleet assets.

Peter Anderson, chief commercial officer of AerCap, stated:

“We are delighted to deepen our long-standing partnership with Virgin Atlantic – one of the world’s most innovative airlines – through this important transaction.

The A330neo is one of the most sought‑after aircraft globally, combining advanced technology with exceptional efficiency. These aircraft will play a key role in Virgin Atlantic’s widebody fleet renewal, supporting its commitment to sustainability by lowering emissions and enhancing operational performance.

The Airbus A330-900 is a modern, efficient wide-body jet from the A330neo (New Engine Option) family.

It features:

  • Advanced Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines
  • Improved aerodynamics
  • Innovative Airspace cabin for passenger comfort

This aircraft is capable of non-stop flights up to 7,200 nautical miles and is suitable for short and long-haul international routes. The A330-900 also reduces fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by 25% compared to previous-generation aircraft.

A Little About Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic is a major British airline and was founded by Sir Richard Branson in 1984. This airline flies to numerous international destinations, boasting a strong transatlantic network to the USA and the Caribbean, as well as routes to Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Primarily uses London Heathrow and Manchester airports as hubs and joined the SkyTeam global airline alliance in March 2023. In 2025, the airline was voted Britain’s only Global Five-Star Airline by APEX for the ninth year running in the Official Airline Ratings.

This airline operates one of the youngest and cleanest fleets. They invest heavily in fuel-efficient aircraft like the A330-900neo, targeting Net Zero by 2050, and successfully conducted the first transatlantic flight using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
