First Non-Stop Service from the U.S. to Australia

United Airlines will start its first-ever non-stop flights from San Francisco, U.S., to Adelaide, Australia, along with two additional routes from Hong Kong to Adelaide and Cairns. The non-stop flight from the U.S. to Australia covers 8,000 miles in under 17 hours. This is the first direct link between the U.S. and Australia. United Airlines will operate the flight under a Boeing 787-9, which offers comfortable Premium Plus seats, and with Polaris’s business class service, the airline looks to offer maximum comfort for the long-haul flight. United Airlines’ 787-9s can carry 257 people, with 48 business class seats. Once the new services begin, United Airlines will be operating 32 Asia-Pacific routes.

Fifth-freedom Routes From Hong Kong International Airport to Australia

United Airlines has revealed two new fifth-freedom routes from Hong Kong Airport. The new routes will commence with four weekly flights to Cairns, Queensland, on December 3rd, 2025, and will be followed by weekly flights to Adelaide on December 5th .

Under fifth-freedom rights, as a U.S.-based airline, United Airlines is entitled to carry passengers between two international locations. This arrangement allows travellers to fly straight from Hong Kong to Adelaide or Cairns without stopping in the U.S., taking advantage of Hong Kong’s significance as an international hub.

United Airlines improves connectivity by partnering with Star Alliance members such as Singapore Airlines and ANA, providing passengers access to a wider network of destinations.
