Fresh figures from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) show that 2025 marked the most hectic summer on record, with 231 million passengers passing through UK airports in the first nine months alone.

Record-Breaking Passenger Surge Through UK Airports

Officials say total passenger numbers for the full year may surpass 300 million, breaking last year’s total of 295 million.

December 2024 saw 22 million travelers, but this month’s Christmas getaway is projected to exceed that figure as millions jet off for winter sun, family reunions and festive breaks.

Despite the surge, punctuality showed modest improvement. About 64% of flights operated on time, a seven-point rise from peak summer 2024, although still below pre-pandemic levels.

Regional Airports Lead Growth as Global Demand Soars

Several regional airports recorded striking increases in passenger numbers. Bournemouth reported a 28% rise compared to last year, while Liverpool climbed 10% and Edinburgh 9%.

European destinations remained the firm favourites of UK travelers, with Palma, Dublin, Amsterdam and Alicante topping the charts.

Middle Eastern carriers also saw strong growth, led by Etihad Airways at 23% and Qatar Airways at 14%. SunExpress and Turkish Airlines also enjoyed noticeable jumps in demand.

Airlines UK chief executive Tim Alderslade said the sector continues to fuel economic growth but warned that rising costs mean cooperation between industry, government and regulators is vital to maintaining momentum.

“Maintaining these positive trends is key as the sector faces growing cost pressures and means industry, government and the CAA working together to ensure the UK remains a competitive place to base and operate an airline,” stated Alderslade.

CAA Warns Travelers to Prepare for Winter Disruption

With millions preparing to travel in the coming weeks, the CAA urged passengers to stay alert to potential delays linked to winter storms, freezing temperatures and heavy passenger volumes.

Selina Chadha, the CAA’s director for consumers and markets, said the UK is “on track for the biggest Christmas getaway in history” and advised travelers to check for updates regularly.

Transport minister Keir Mather said the government has secured the long-term future of UK aviation through airport expansions at Luton, Gatwick and Heathrow and through plans to modernise airspace.
