On March 14, 2026, a rare Qatar Airways Airbus A380 aircraft landed at Manchester Airport (MAN) at approximately 08:55 a.m. GMT. Operating a repatriation flight from Bangkok, the flight was bringing home stranded passengers from Southeast Asia due to airspace closures.

Why is the A380 rare for Qatar?
The Airbus A380 is considered “rare” for Qatar Airways because the airline operates only 10 aircraft of this type, which is a very small fraction of its total fleet of approximately 237 aircraft. Its scheduled services to the city are typically handled by smaller aircraft like the Airbus A350-1000 or Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
The A380 is only profitable on high-demand, slot-constrained routes where adding more flights is impossible, such as London Heathrow, Sydney, and Bangkok. The airline originally grounded the entire fleet in 2020 and intended to retire them permanently. They were only reactivated to fill capacity gaps caused by the grounding of A350 aircraft due to surface degradation issues. The A380s remain in service primarily because of ongoing delivery delays for their intended replacement, the Boeing 777X, which is not expected until 2028.
While the Qatar Airways A380 is a rare sight, the aircraft type itself is a daily staple for Emirates, operating three daily flights. Emirates is the world’s largest operator of the type, with over 90 active, representing nearly half of all A380s ever built.

Landing at Manchester Airport
Qatar Airways does not normally operate direct flights between the two airports; under normal circumstances, passengers would connect through Hamad International Airport (DOH). has not been possible due to airspace closures within the region. Therefore, these flights were arranged to bring home passengers stranded in Southeast Asia, specifically Bangkok and Phuket.
With the ability to carry over 500 passengers, the Airbus A380 was the most efficient way to transport the maximum number of people in a single flight. Passengers reported being moved into emergency accommodation before receiving messages that they would be flown directly back to the U.K. on these specially chartered flights.
