Qantas and Jetstar Add Thousands of Seats to Melbourne for Australian Football Fans

Qantas, Australia’s national airline and the country’s largest, as well as its low-cost subsidiary, Jetstar, are operating an additional 27 flights for the weekend of 26-29 September 2025, in order to allow Australian Football fans to travel to Melbourne for the AFL (Australian Football League) Grand Final match between the Geelong Cats and the Brisbane Lions, which will take place on Saturday 27 September 2025.

More Flights to Melbourne

The 27 additional flights, totalling more than 4,500 additional seats, are aimed at football fans based in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia, who intend on travelling to Melbourne, the capital city of the Australian state of Victoria, where the match will be held. The venue, Melbourne Cricket Ground, also known as the MCG, is Australia’s largest sports venue with a total capacity of more than 100,000 spectators. It is the venue of choice for AFL Grand Final matches.

Flights and Fares

Both Qantas and Jetstar are operating flights to Melbourne for the game this weekend. Tickets are available from 20 September, and both airlines urge fans to buy tickets ASAP to avoid missing out. Between Friday 26 September and Monday 29 September, Qantas has added seven return flights between Brisbane and Melbourne, as well as one additional flight between Melbourne and Brisbane, operated using its Boeing 737 aircraft. Jetstar has added six return flights from Brisbane operated with its Airbus A320 aircraft.

Qantas and Jetstar flight prices, correct as of 20:00 local time on 20 September, are as follows:

Qantas, Brisbane to Melbourne:

  • Thursday 25 September — $503 AUD (£245 approx.)
  • Friday 26 September — $420 AUD (£205 approx.)
  • Saturday 27 September (morning) — $410 AUD (£200 approx.)

Qantas, Melbourne to Brisbane:

  • Saturday 27 September (afternoon) — $205 AUD (£100 approx.)
  • Sunday 28 September — $503 AUD (£245 approx.)
  • Monday 29 September — $420 AUD (£205 approx.)

Jetstar, Brisbane to Melbourne:

  • Thursday 25 September — $179 AUD (£87 approx.)
  • Friday 26 September — $167 AUD (£81 approx.)
  • Saturday 27 September (morning) — $199 AUD (£97 approx.)

Jetstar, Melbourne to Brisbane

  • Saturday 27 September (afternoon) — $167 AUD (£81 approx.)
  • Sunday 28 September  — $167 AUD (£81 approx.)
  • Monday 29 September — $295 AUD (£143 approx.)
