Qantas Airways has announced a new direct flight from Sydney to Sapporo, Japan. The new route will take passengers from sunny Australian beaches to the snowy ski-hubs of Japan. The flights, which will be operated using Airbus A330-200s, will commence on the 15th of December, 2025. This will be Qantas’ 100th destination, reinforcing their commitment to connect Australia to the world.

Passenger comfort and convenience first

The new flight route from Sydney to Sapporo will utilise Airbus A330-200 aircraft, capable of carrying between 210 and 250 passengers. Able to fly up to 15,094 kilometres, the aircraft can provide over 20,000 seats during the winter season. Tickets will go on sale on the 20th of January. Economy tickets will include comprehensive amenities, such as checked baggage, meals, drinks and entertainment.

Flights will run three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays between the 15th of December 2025 and the 28th of March 2026. Qantas will launch flights early morning from Sydney, landing in the evening in Sapporo. The nonstop flight will reduce travel time, giving passengers more time to enjoy the winter wonderland. Flights will land at Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport, a popular gateway to the many ski resorts in the area, giving passengers an immediate entrance to the snowy landscapes of Sapporo.

What to expect from the new route

Sapporo is the capital of Japan’s mountainous island of Hokkaido and is known for its beautiful snow and ski opportunities. The capital even hosted the Winter Olympics in 1972. The new flights from Sydney will coincide with the renowned Sapporo Snow Festival. The week-long event is one of Japan’s most popular winter festivals and is held every February. Therefore, passengers will be able to enjoy the pristine snow while experiencing the rich culture of Japan.

Qantas last flew to Sapporo in 2020, however had to stop due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking about the new route, the airline’s CEO Cam Wallace said:

“We know Sapporo is an extremely popular winter destination for Aussies who love snow and we’re excited to make it easier to reach Hokkaido’s world-class ski resorts.”
