The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) inaugurated on December 25, 2025 easing congestion at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). NMIA is developed and operated by Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL).

NMIA’s first flight

NMIA’s inaugural flight, IndiGo 6E460 from Bengaluru, landed at 08:00 hours. The passengers were welcomed by Chairman Gautam Adani himself. Post a ceremonial walk, the launch was concluded with a flag-hoisting ceremony led by Param Vir Chakra awardees Captain Bana Singh and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, followed by the national anthem. Leading sportspersons Suryakumar Yadav, Mithali Raj and Sunil Chhetri, along with social influencers Malini Agarwal and Viraj Ghelani were present.

Twin-Airport Model and NMIA’s Capacity and Design

The NMIA is a Greenfield International Airport project at Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), a subsidiary of Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), which holds the majority stake of 74 percent, while the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO), a Government of Maharashtra undertaking, holds the remaining 26 percent.

This twin-airport model, alongside CSMIA is expected to ease congestion. The launch with Terminal 1, is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually rising up to 20 million annually upon the completion of the fourth terminal. It will also facilitate 3.2 million tonnes of cargo facility annually competing with top tier cities of the world.

The airport is designed by the team behind Zaha Hadid Architects, drawing inspiration from lotus, the national flower of India. It embodies the timeless symbol in Indian culture.

NMIA’s Future Impact

NMIA spans over 1,160 hectares (2,866 acres), on completion with two parallel runways. The greenfield project has an eco-friendly infrastructure, incorporating renewable energy sources and green building practices. This includes incorporating features like solar power and rainwater harvesting.

NMIA will boost Maharashtra’s GDP by 0.5%, inviting growth in real estate as property prices rise by 30% in key areas.

This landmark launch has however, been a result of nearly two decade long effort. Starting from receiving approval in 2007, navigating through hurdles such as complex resettlement, environmental clearances, and engineering challenges to the Adani Group take over in 2021.
