MTU Aero Engines appoints Johannes Bussmann as CEO

MTU Aero Engines appoints Johannes Bussmann as CEO following Lars Wagner’s appointment as CEO of Airbus. He will be joining the executive board of MTU Aero Engines, which is listed on Germany’s DAX 40 stock index effective July 15, 2025.

CEO at MTU Aero

Bussmann’s appointment as chief executive officer (CEO) was first announced at the end of 2024 by MTU’s Supervisory Board, but no specific date was given at the time until now. The current chief executive officer, Lars Wagner, will step down from his position on the executive board on Aug. 31, 2025, and will support the transition as an advisor until he leaves the company on Oct. 31, 2025. 

Wagner has been appointed CEO of Airbus’ commercial aircraft division. He will succeed current chief executive Christian Scherer on Jan. 1, 2026 His new role will be on the Airbus Executive Committee. Although his initial entry is set on Jan. 1, 2026, Wagner will undergo an early transition into his new role from the beginning of November 2025, no specific dates have been given. This early entry is to ensure a smooth transition with Christian Scherer who will remain CEO through Dec. 31, 2025.

Johannes Bussmann

Bussmann is currently the CEO of TÜV SÜD AG and previously worked at Lufthansa Technik AG. His new role at MTU Aero Engines AG is based on a five-year term, with his mandate running until July 14, 2030.

Born in 1969 in Osterwick, Germany, he studied aerospace engineering, earning a doctoral degree in combustion technology from RWTH Aachen University. Bussmann began his career in 1998 at ABB, working as a product engineer before joining Lufthansa Technik. Bussmann was also the CEO at Lufthansa Technik AG from 2015 until the end of 2022.

During his time at Lufthansa Technik in 1999, he worked as a development engineer. He held several leadership positions all over Germany and Singapore, as a sales director Asia-Pacific, vice president in Marketing & Sales, and senior vice president in component and engine services. He later became an executive board member for Human Resources, Engine & VIP services in 2012.
