Lufthansa Technik was awarded the first LEAP-1A Premier MRO licence in February 2018 by CFM International, before gaining approval by the German LBA, European EASA, and US FAA in November 2019. The company earned its original equipment manufacturer (OEM) licence for LEAP-1B in 2022 and worked on the Airbus A320neo, becoming the world’s first company to carry out a complete performance restoration shop visit on a LEAP-1A engine in October 2022. According to Lufthansa Technik, customer demand for LEAP engines has grown significantly since the first induction.

The company now has a total of 74 LEAP-1A and 26 LEAP-1B power plants, with the next set of engines already on their way. The company’s global partners are also providing maintenance, repair, and overhaul of CFM LEAP engines. XEOS is one of the company’s joint ventures with GE Aerospace, based in Poland. Lufthansa Technik is already using the extra overhaul capacity at XEOS for LEAP-1B engines and intends to expand this to one of its future facilities in Calgary, called Lufthansa Technik Canada, for test cell capacity for LEAP-1B engines.

The company is currently aiming to achieve over 250 annual LEAP engine inductions throughout its global network. LEAP-1A engines are one of the two powerplant options used for Airbus A320neo narrow-body aircraft, and LEAP-1B engines for the Boeing 737 MAX narrow-body aircraft series. There are three types of LEAP engines, two of which are mentioned above, LEAP engines have two main shop types, a QTSV and PRSV shop. A QTSV shop is faster and more focused on routine maintenance, addressing immediate issues, while a PRSV shop is a more comprehensive overhaul aimed at restoring engines to their original performance specifications.
