Lufthansa A380s Undergo New Retrofit in Dresden for Business Class

Lufthansa A380s are undergoing new retrofitting in Dresden for Business Class. The retrofit is for a total of eight A380s that are to be given new seats in order to ‘modernize’ their business class and will scheduled in February, with current operations being carried out by Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH (EFW), an aerospace company based in Dresden.

The A380s upgrade for Lufthansa

The German airline Lufthansa are starting ahead with the retrofit on the A380s, with a total of eight in their fleet scheduled for February in co-operation with EFW as a way to put the new retrofitted aircraft in service by April this year, with a full commercial roll-out by Summer of 2027.

Heiko Reitz, the hub manager of Lufthansa’s Munich Branch praised the new upgrades in a statement:

”The new premium seats offer more privacy and significantly more comfort than before. We look forward to offering our passengers this enhanced travel experience in Business Class starting in April”.

Lufthansa have also taken the opportunity to retrofit their entire existing fleet, not just the A380s but other upgrades are expected to follow in the coming months, like the Boeing 747-8 and the Airbus A350-900, along with routine repairs if needed.

The Business End of Aviation

The details of Lufthansa’s retrofit of the A380s is inclusive of the seat capacity, consisting of 371 in Economy Class, 52 in Premium Economy Class, and, 68 seats in Business Class. This brings the total capacity of an A380 at 509 seats across all classes, making it the largest long-haul craft in Lufthansa’s fleet. The new Business Class seats are also said to offer a 2M width, about the size of the average single bed. The retrofit also offers passengers Bluetooth connectivity and mobile dividers for additional privacy. the seats themselves will be manufactured by Thompson Aero Seating Limited.
