Operated by BIAL, Kempegowda international airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) is the first airport that has served over 41.88 million passengers in south India. The airport has surpassed 350 million cumulative passengers since its opening, and its operator BIAL is supported by Fairfax India Holdings Corporation (FIHC). FIHC has been a major source of the airport’s development and transformation due to several investments.

BIAL will allocate 31 acres of land for the new facility according to an announcement by IndiGo. The maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility will support the airline’s expanding fleet. It stated that the facility will be capable of handling both narrow and wide-body aircraft, reinforcing IndiGo’s maintenance and operational capabilities at BLR Airport. Pieter Elbers, the chief executive officer at IndiGo said:

“Developing broad IndiGo MRO capabilities marks a significant and very strategic step for IndiGo. Partnering with BIAL underlines our shared commitment to drive long-term growth of the aviation ecosystem in Bengaluru and cement its status as, amongst the best and world-class international hubs in India. Together with BIAL, we are further shaping the future of Indian aviation by focusing on innovation, growth and global connectivity that will define India’s leadership in the skies. We see this collaboration as a pivotal step towards building a significant global presence for IndiGo, as well as for India”.

The signed MoU is part of both companies strategic initiatives to enhance aviation infrastructure and to make Bengaluru a key hub for international and domestic operations. Hari Marar, the managing director and CEO of BIAL, said:

“We are delighted that India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has chosen Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport), to set up its latest MRO facility and enhance its operations. We have had a very successful, long-term relationship with IndiGo and this collaboration further strengthens our association with the airline. This is a strong validation of the growth potential of BLR Airport and the City of Bengaluru as a premier aviation hub. The partnership reinforces our commitment to developing world-class aviation infrastructure and enhancing BLR Airport’s role as India’s premier aerospace and MRO hub. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Government of Karnataka for their continued support in making this collaboration possible and enabling us to drive forward the next phase of aviation-led growth for the region.”
