An incident in which two helicopters collided mid-air and crashed in the western area of Rio de Janeiro has left six people dead, according to the local fire department. U.S. singer-songwriter Oliver Tree, who was embarking on a world tour at the time, is believed to have been on board one of the aircraft involved in the incident.

What happened?
The two helicopters collided in the air above Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, June 14. One of the aircraft then crashed into a nearby car park, setting multiple vehicles ablaze. Videos shared by witnesses on social media show the moment of impact, as well as flames and thick black smoke rising from the crash site.
Fernandes de Freitas, a tyre repair worker, witnessed the crash and subsequent fire, telling The Mirror:
“It was terrifying, absolutely horrifying,”
He also described seeing what appeared to be one of the passengers jumping from the helicopter before it hit the ground.

What comes next?
Efforts to formally identify all six victims of the crash are still ongoing, and the names of those on board both aircraft have not yet been fully released. According to The Independent, American singer and comedian Oliver Tree was reported to be on board one of the helicopters involved in the collision.
YouTube content creator and Britain’s Got Talent judge KSI took to X shortly after the news of the crash broke to pay tribute to the musician, posting:
“Can’t believe I’m actually having to type this. You’re 32 man. You should still be here. You still had so much life to live. So much music to make. So much content to make. You’re a legend and will always be a legend. Still doesn’t feel real. Genuinely feel sick. I love you bro.”
Officials have also stated that an investigation into the cause of the crash is now underway.
