Embraer and the Colombian Aeronautical Industry Corporation (CIAC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that suggests expansion of industrial and technical collaboration with an aim to boost Colombia’s aerospace industry. This agreement was signed on April 8, 2026 in Santiago, Chile, at the twenty-third edition of the International Air and Space Fair (FIDAE).

Key Players Signing the MoU
This MoU signed by Embraer and CIAC indicates a lasting commercial relationship between the two companies has been built, which now has the potential to amplify the Colombian aviation industry. The agreement suggests prospective cooperation across Embraer’s extensive product line-up, which encompasses varied aircraft fit for military and commercial purposes. This product portfolio includes military aircraft like the A-29 Super Tucano, and the environmentally conscious E-Jet family.
The CIAC S.A. (Corporación de la Industria Aeronáutica Colombiana), is an industrial and commercial company that acts as Colombia’s state aviation manufacturer, which is linked to the Ministry of National Defence. With more than 70 years of experience, the company is involved in both the design and maintenance services of aircraft and their components, across both commercial and defence sectors.
Embraer is a Brazilian-based aerospace corporation with global reach, and the third-largest civil aircraft manufacturer in the world, according to the company. Embraer designs, develops, manufactures, and markets aircraft and their systems, as well as providing after-sales support services. Operating in commercial, executive, and agricultural aviation, as well as defence and security sectors, Embraer has delivered more than 9,000 aircraft since it was established in 1969 according to the company. It is also estimated by the company that on average, an aircraft manufactured by Embraer takes off from somewhere in the world every 10 seconds, transporting more than 150 million passengers annually.
Both companies are major players in the Latin American aerospace scene, and were consequently both in attendance at this year’s FIDAE, where they signed the MoU. FIDAE is the main aerospace exhibition of Latin America, held biennially in Chile, this year from April 7 to April 12. Considered a prestigious event, FIDAE provides companies with the opportunity to present their achievements, showcase technological progressions, network across the aviation sector, and learn about the most current developments in aerospace. The signing of the MoU at FIDAE reflects the event’s role in encouraging collaboration across the aerospace sector.

Boosting the Colombian Aviation Industry
With Embraer’s impressive global scope as a leading manufacturer of commercial jets up to 150 seats, the partnership this MoU proposes could offer a significant opportunity for the CIAC to consolidate its position as a relevant player internationally. Colonel Oscar Francisco Zúñiga Martin, President of CIAC (E) commented on the potential of the MoU to strengthen and develop the Colombian aviation sector, saying,
“This agreement allows us to advance in the transfer of knowledge, the development of technical capabilities and the integration into global value chains, contributing to the growth of the sector and the positioning of Colombia as a regional benchmark in maintenance, innovation and aeronautical development.”
Embraer could also benefit significantly from the cooperation this MoU suggests. Colombia represents an important market for Embraer, with an existing fleet of 50 aircraft from the company operating in the country, serving customers across the multiple areas, including Defence, Commercial, and Executive Aviation. On top of this, supporting CIAC’s development could allow for strategic linking of business activity, as asserted by Fabio Caparica, vice-president of contracts at Embraer Defence & Security, who commented,
“The signing of this MoU strengthens the relationship built over the years with CIAC and paves the way for a possible expansion of technical and industrial cooperation across Embraer’s portfolio […] Our goal is to further strengthen the Colombian aerospace industry and evaluate opportunities to integrate CIAC into Embraer’s global production chains.”
This MoU represents a crucial step towards strengthening the Colombian aerospace industry, and it will be interesting to watch how the agreement will operate more specifically in practice.
