Cathay Pacific has announced a new direct route connecting Hong Kong to Urumqi, starting at the end of April 2025.

Stronger Connections with Mainland China

The new route connecting Hong Kong and Urumqi will commence on 28 April 2025, with 4 pairs of flights operating weekly. This addition means that the airline now travels to 20 locations in China’s vast mainland.

While encouraging Hong Kong citizens to travel to these areas, the new route also increases connectivity for Chinese travellers who can fly with Cathay to Hong Kong and change to flights departing for other regions, including North America and Europe.

Cathay Pacific: New Routes, Increased Connectivity and New Markets

Cathay Pacific has seen significant growth in business in recent years. The group ended 2024 strong, with a record high of 100,000 passengers daily during the year-end holiday season. They also started 2025 strong, with a 100% recovery from the pandemic in terms of the number of operating flights. The three-runway system at Hong Kong International Airport also brings expansion potential. With the third runway dedicated to flights connecting mainland China, Cathay’s new route secures a fair share of the market and further increases connectivity between different regions in China.
