Strong recovery for Cathay Group as air travel booms in 2024

On 2 January 2025, the Cathaty Group announced a significant milestone of surpassing 100,000 passengers daily. The group first reached this milestone on 15 December, and for 8 days afterwards in total during the year-end travel peak. Ronald Lam, the CEO of Cathay Group, quoted 2024 as a year with “unprecedented progress and expansion” and a strong recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Asian region was busy with air traffic in 2024, home to over half of the busiest flight routes globally. Two of which connect Hong Kong (HKG), the home base of the Cathay Group, to other major Asian cities. Click here to read more.

Cathay Group: great potential to come

Surpassing the milestone by the end of 2024 marks a strong end to the group’s two-year recovery. A new chapter of immense potential awaits the group as 2025 begins.

The Hong Kong-based group is an Oneworld Alliance member. Its members include full-service airline Cathay Pacific, cargo business Cathay Cargo, low-cost airline HK Express, cargo carrier Air Hong Kong and other subsidiaries. The group has been serving since 1946. With a fleet of 231 in total, they are expecting 73 new passenger aircraft to join in the coming years (as of June 2024).

The group expects to reach 100% pre-pandemic flights from January 2025. This shows the group’s strong potential as it expands with the recently completed Three-Runway System at Hong Kong International Airport.
