An American Airlines flight bound for Charlotte, North Carolina, was forced to return to Harry Reid International Airport due to “mechanical issues,” according to reports. Witnesses saw smoke emanating from the flight mid-air.

The incident with the airline’s Airbus A321 aircraft

American Airlines flight 1665, bound for Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Charlotte, North Carolina, was forced to turn back to the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. This was the airport from which the flight had departed. After around ten minutes, the flight landed back at the airport due to technical issues.

As per reports, the flight left the Las Vegas airport at around 8:10 am local time and landed back at about 8:20 am. Witnesses claimed to have seen smoke coming from the flight while it was in the sky.

However, the major US airline has said that despite seeing smoke and flames in the air, their airline mechanics found no sign of fire after initially inspecting the flight. The FAA will conduct a further investigation into the incident. There were around 153 passengers and six crew members on board. There were no reported injuries, and the passengers landed safely, as per the Federal Aviation Administration.

According to the airline and the airport, as quoted by reports, the plane had taxied back to the gate using its own power. The aircraft was an Airbus A321, which has now been taken out of service while it is being inspected.

The airline, in a statement, said that all the passengers and crew were deplaned normally and appreciated the “professionalism” of its crew. The airline said that it was working on getting its customers to their destinations as quickly as possible.

Earlier this year, another flight belonging to the airline, departing from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, headed to Delhi and was forced to divert to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport after a possible security concern. However, the threat was fortunately dismissed.
