Air Montenegro signed its first-ever codeshare partnership on Jan. 26 with Turkish Airlines, a major step in expanding Air Montenegro’s international expansion strategy and strengthening the airline’s connectivity within the Turkish Airlines Balkan connectivity network.

What Does the Codeshare Cover?

Under the codeshare agreement, Turkish Airlines will place its TK code, the two-letter IATA airline designator code for the carrier between Istanbul and Podgorica and Tivat, improving both of the airlines connectivity and access to the Balkan market.

Air Montenegro will add its 4O code, used to identify the airline on tickets and booking systems, to Turkish Airlines flights between Turkey and Montenegro, as well as on routes from Istanbul to Dubai and Baku, giving it indirect access to long-haul markets without operating its own long-haul aircraft.

The airlines also signed a Special Prorate Agreement (SPA). This sets how ticket revenue is shared on connecting journeys and usually gives better commercial terms than standard interline rules.

Why the Partnership Matters & Growing Context?

The Air Montenegro codeshare links the airline’s regional network with Turkish Airlines’ global network of more than 350 destinations in over 130 countries, strengthening the Turkish Airlines Balkan connectivity network and giving Air Montenegro passengers more global travel options.

Air Montenegro CEO Vukadin Stojanović and Turkish Airlines CEO Bilal Ekşi said the deal will help boost tourism and trade between Montenegro and Turkey. Passengers will benefit from coordinated schedules, easier transfers through Istanbul, and the ability to book single tickets across both airlines.

This is Air Montenegro’s first codeshare since its launch in 2021, with reports suggesting the airline is already discussing further agreements as part of its international expansion strategy.

The agreement comes as Air Montenegro continues to grow. The airline carried more than 500,000 passengers in 2025 for the first time and plans to add a fourth aircraft in Q2 2026 to support network expansion and capacity growth.

Will this codeshare agreement help the airline scale globally or will it need deeper partnerships to compete in the Balkan market? Share your thoughts below!
