The CEO of the AirAsia Group, Tony Fernandes, has stated that he is confident in his airline’s ability to recover from its ongoing financial issues. This comes amid speculation that the Malaysian government is preparing for AirAsia’s potential collapse. Fernandes however believes that the airline is capable of raising the funds necessary to repay its outstanding debts.

Why is AirAsia in Difficulty?

AirAsia’s liabilities stood at $4.52 billion on June. 30, almost 20 times greater than the value of the airline’s liquid assets.

This followed a 66% rise in average jet fuel prices for Asian airlines across the second quarter of 2026, partially due to the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict.

Local sources began reporting Wednesday Sep. 16, that the Malaysian government had enquired with AirAsia’s national rivals Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air Malaysia, about whether the carriers could absorb AirAsia’s market share, if the carrier was to collapse unexpectedly.

AirAsia has previously estimated that it controls 40% of the entire Malaysian aviation sector, including 60% of the domestic market.

Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air Malaysia reportedly told the government that they were only prepared to stage a large scale takeover of AirAsia’s routes, if they could also assume the airline’s aircraft leases.

Why Has Fernandes Remained Positive?

AirAsia’s share price fell by 24% on Wednesday Sep. 16, after the talks between the Malaysian government and AirAsia’s rivals became public knowledge.

This may have prompted Fernandes to make a statement on AirAsia’s financial health, after the airline initially declined to comment on the talks.

Fernandes said that AirAsia had “strong liquidity”, and that he expected the airline to raise more than $1 billion towards financing its outstanding debts by January 2027.

He told reporters that,

“Covid was far, far worse than what we’re dealing with now. We couldn’t fly then, but we can fly now and our demand is very strong.”

AirAsia’s varied network of routes  would also allow it to benefit from future rises in demand for aviation tourism across the Middle Eastern and Australian markets.
