TAROM has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737-8, becoming the first Romanian airline to operate a Boeing 737 MAX. The aircraft was delivered on Sept. 12, 2026, as part of the carrier’s plans to renew its single-aisle fleet.
First of two 737 MAX aircraft
The aircraft is the first of two Boeing 737-8 jets that TAROM will lease from CDB Aviation. The Romanian flag carrier currently operates four Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft.
According to Boeing, the 737-8 can reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by around 20% compared with the aircraft it replaces. TAROM plans to use the new aircraft on routes connecting Bucharest with major European capitals.
The aircraft has been named after Romanian football manager Mircea Lucescu.
Its arrival introduces the 737 MAX family to TAROM’s fleet as the airline works to replace older single-aisle aircraft.
The 737-8 is part of the 737 MAX family of aircraft, which Boeing developed as an updated version of its 737 family. The aircraft is designed for short- and medium-haul operations and is widely used by airlines on European routes.

TAROM CEO Cristian Anghel said the aircraft’s introduction is part of the airline’s restructuring and fleet renewal plans, with operational efficiency among the objectives.
CDB Aviation said the delivery continues its partnership with TAROM and Boeing, while Boeing described the aircraft’s arrival as a milestone in the airline’s fleet modernisation.
The delivery also marks the first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to enter service with a Romanian airline.
Boeing’s 2026 Commercial Market Outlook estimates that airlines in Eurasia will need to increase their in-service fleets from around 6,800 aircraft to nearly 11,000 by 2045. The manufacturer expects single-aisle aircraft to account for about 81% of new deliveries to the region during that period.
