Ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is scheduled to start using Starlink Wi-Fi in early 2027. The carrier officially announced its partnership with SpaceX’s satellite network on July 14, 2026. This agreement marks the end of Frontier’s long-standing policy of not offering any onboard internet connection, with the use of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines is an American ultra-low-cost carrier headquartered in Denver, Colorado. It operates an all-Airbus fleet, and serves over 120 destinations across the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. Known for its signature animal-themed plane tails, it provides highly affordable base fares paired with “a la carte” pricing for extras like carry-ons and seat assignments.

As this is a budget carrier, the in-flight experience is no-frills. Seats are standard economy (thin with limited legroom) and there are currently no in-flight entertainment systems or built-in Wi-Fi. This is because historically, Frontier has strictly maintained a “no-internet policy” on flights to avoid the heavy equipment and fuel costs of older satellite tech. However, the airline is introducing SpaceX’s Starlink Wi-Fi starting in early 2027 to capture higher-spending travellers, match major competitors, and adapt to shifting consumer demands for reliable, gate-to-gate connectivity.

Frontier Airlines CEO Jimmy Dempsey, in a press release, stated:

“Starlink transforms the onboard experience, giving customers the flexibility to work, stream, browse and stay connected throughout their journey.”

Starlink Wi-Fi

Starlink WiFi is a high-speed, satellite-based internet service developed by SpaceX. It bypasses traditional underground cables by using a vast constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. By tapping into a massive constellation of LEO satellites, it allows passengers to stream video, game online, and work seamlessly at 35,000 feet. Unlike older, slower in-flight WiFi, Starlink Aviation uses thousands of satellites that are much closer to the Earth. This significantly reduces signal travel time (latency) and increases bandwidth, allowing airlines to offer speeds up to 500+ megabits per second per plane.

Managing Partner of Indigo Partners Bill Franke stated:

“Starlink will provide our portfolio airlines with reliable, high-speed connectivity, further enhancing the customer experience of flying on Wizz, Frontier, Volaris, JetSMART and Cebu.”

Frontier Airlines will be the launch customer for a “managed service” model directly run by Starlink, which will allow a budget airline to add premium internet without having to absorb all of the traditional operational costs upfront. Because Frontier operates under a pay-per-use business model, they are highly likely to treat Starlink access as a paid add-on, creating a highly lucrative new revenue stream.
