China has announced that it will resume direct flight operations to Taiwan and imports of aquaculture products. The announcement comes following the meeting between Cheng Li-wun, head of the Kuomintang Party, and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday, April 10.
Direct flight from China to Taiwan
The Taiwan work office, under China’s Communist Party, issued a statement saying it would seek to establish a long-term communication mechanism between the Communist Party and Taiwan’s Kuomintang Party.
They also plan to lift the ban on Taiwanese aquaculture products and facilitate their import.
China banned individual trips by its countrymen to Taiwan in 2019. Taiwan has also implemented a rule that Chinese visitors require a valid resident visa from another country, such as the U.S. or the European Union, to apply for a Taiwan visitor visa.
Relationship between China and Taiwan
China and Taiwan have had a contentious relationship since 2016, following the election of Tsai Ing-wen from the Democratic Progressive Party as president.
Taiwan has been running its own government, but China asserts sovereignty over the island. After 2016, China has dispatched military aircraft and vessels toward the island continuously.
Against this backdrop of tensions, the announcement to resume direct flights to Taiwan from China aimed to bring back the ties between the two sides.
