SpiceJet warns passengers of possible disrupted flights at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU), on April 5, 2026, due to weather warnings of thunderstorms and low visibility over the next five days. SpiceJet updates are expected to continue.
Kolkata’s airport
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU), formerly Calcutta Aerodrome and known as Dum Dum Airport, is the largest hub for air traffic in eastern India, handling over 22 million passengers annually. Located in Dum Dum, West Bengal, it is the sixth-busiest airport in India and serves as a major gateway to Northeast India and Southeast Asia.
The airport has been operational since 1924, making it one of India’s oldest airports. The terminal operates as a silent airport to reduce noise pollution, limiting public announcements.
The airport serves 28 airlines, including major carriers like IndiGo, Air India, Emirates, and Singapore Airlines with approximately 300 to 400 daily flights. This averages around 100,000 to 150,000 total annual flights.
Weather Disruptions
Unstable weather patterns, such as thunderstorms and low visibility around Kolkata, have slowed aircraft movements at CCU. Ground operations have been affected as air traffic controllers adjust arrival and departure rates in order to maintain safe separation between flights.
While details of cancelled services are still emerging, flight tracking data and airport information show a mix of late departures, diversions and scrubbed services on domestic routes. Taxiways and gates have become congested due to the irregular flow of traffic, therefore extended turnaround times are inevitable for aircraft that do manage to land and depart from the airport.
SpiceJet have urged passengers to closely track schedule changes, stating in a post on X:
“Due to bad weather in Kolkata (CCU), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may be affected,”
What this means for passengers
Short-lived thunderstorms can cause a knock-on effect that can disrupt daily schedules, especially in the late afternoon and evening banks of departures. Passengers often spend several hours in the terminal as airlines work to reshuffle aircraft and crews around changing weather windows.
During delays, passengers may be shifted to flights departing many hours later or even the following day, therefore putting strain on local accommodation surrounding the airport. Checking live flight status before leaving for the airport, monitoring airline apps and preparing for potential waiting time inside the terminal can help to reduce stress on the day of travel and keeping up-to-date on announcements.
