A commercial flight carrying 55 passengers made a successful landing next to Somalia’s airport with no fatalities. The pilot has received praise for poise and decision-making.

Emergency Landing In Mogadishu

On Tuesday, a Fokker 50 aircraft operated by Starsky Airlines developed a mechanical problem soon after taking off from Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle Airport on a domestic service. The crew attempted to return to the runway, but the aircraft couldn’t stop in time, so the pilot landed the plane onto the adjacent shoreline, coming to rest in shallow coastal waters.

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries or fatalities among the 50 passengers and five crew members. Social media footage has shown passengers exiting the aircraft and walking unaided along the beach as responders moved in.

Pilot Receives Praise For Poise And Decision Making

Somali’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the crew acted quickly after the fault was detected about 15 minutes into the flight, which was bound for the northern region of Puntland.

“The pilot’s swift and calm decision-making played a decisive role in ensuring the safety of everyone on board.”

The incident highlights the importance of pilot training and quick decision-making in aviation safety. When technical faults occur, particularly during high-pressure phases such as take-off and landing, pilots have only seconds to assess incomplete information, weigh multiple risks and choose the safest possible course of action. In this case, the pilot remained calm, maintained control, and landed on the shoreline after overrunning the runway, preventing a more serious accident. Such decisions are the result of rigorous training, experience and situational awareness, reinforcing why investment in pilot training and emergency preparedness is as vital to aviation safety as the technology onboard the aircraft itself.

Passengers travelling within Somalia and throughout the Horn of Africa are advised to monitor updates from airlines and local aviation authorities, though no widespread disruptions have been reported in the wake of this event.

Pilot training is imperative for circumstances like this, as well as clear decision-making and effective emergency procedures in aviation. Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has confirmed that a formal investigation has been launched to determine the cause.
