International passengers faced delays after level 4 of Brisbane Airport was evacuated following a routine testing of an air conditioning heating unit.
Numerous flights faced delays of up to three hours
Brisbane Airport’s level 4 of the airport (the international terminal) was evacuated after a ‘small’ amount of smoke, released during a routine safety check of an air conditioning unit, activated fire alarms.
The disruption began shortly after 8am, when fire alarms notified passengers and workers to find their nearest fire exit. By mid-morning, passengers were allowed back into the terminal, where airport staff worked to regain the normal flight schedule back to normal.
Brisbane Airport’s Domestic terminal was unaffected
Brisbane Airport holds two terminals, Domestic (T2) and International (T1). The International terminal oversees level 2,3, and 4, while the Domestic terminal runs on just one level.
The ground level (level 1) includes public access to the terminal, with various vending machines for those wanting a quick snack before their travels. Level 2 manages visitor information and provides space for the Terminal Transfer Bus. Level 3 holds passport control (passport control is planned to move to level 4 during upgrades) and a myriad of retail shops before security screening on Level 4, with check-in and security before departure.
