EVA Air’s board of directors have approved a fleet investment – including the purchase of four Boeing 787-9 aircraft and upgrades to its existing Boeing 777-30ER fleet. The decisions were approved on Dec. 26, 2025 and authorized the spending of up to NT$60.88 billion (around $1.94 billion) on the new jets. A smaller portion of these funds will also be used to extend leases and upgrade cabins on existing aircraft. Overall, the move aims to strengthen the Taiwanese carrier’s long-haul operations while meeting passenger demand.

EVA Air’s Fleet Growth Strategy

The board approved the acquisition of four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners on Dec. 26. EVA Air has not shared delivery timelines or engine choices, though it already operates aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 100 and GE Aerospace GEnx engines. EVA Air currently has 89 planes in the fleet, including both the 787-9 and the larger 787-10 for busier long-haul services.

The new order aligns with the carrier’s longer-term fleet expansion plans. By 2033, EVA Air expect to gain five additional 787-9s and four 787-10s for their fleet. Furthermore, the airline has placed orders for 24 Airbus A350-1000 jets, with deliveries beginning in 2027. Lastly, they also have scheduled 18 Airbus A321neo aircraft to arrive from 2029. Collectively, Eva Air is intending to replace outdated jets and improve their fuel efficiency.

Cabin Renovation for Boeing 777s

Alongside its new aircraft purchases, EVA Air approved renovations on its Boeing 777-300ER fleet. The airline will extend lease agreements for four 777-300ERs and refurbish the cabins of six additional aircraft. The refurbishment program is valued at up to NT$4.77 billion ($152 million) and passengers travelling in every cabin class can expect to see improvements in seating and in-flight entertainment as part of the upgrades. EVA Air also named Panasonic Avionics and Elevate Aircraft Seating as partners in the refurbishment effort.

In the current environmental climate, EVA Air is aiming to reduce its carbon footprint through replacing outdated aircraft with modernized ones. Overall, the airline is showing an interest in stainability and staying competitive within global markets.
