On Sunday, 7 December 2025, Qatar Airways named Hamad Ali Al-Khater as its new Chief Executive Officer. He takes over from Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, who stepped down after only two years as the CEO. However, the airline did not give a reason for his sudden departure.

About Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways is the government-owned national airline of Qatar. The company is based in Doha, and is known for its many awards, including winning “Word’s Best Airline” in both 2024 and 2025. The airline is also praised for its premium services, such as Qsuite business class.

Qatar Airways flies to more than 170 destinations across the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. It is a member of the Oneworld alliance, making it an important global carrier for both passengers and cargo. Qatar Airways is recognised for innovation, including the use of sustainable aviation fuel and high-speed Wi-Fi.

Hamad Ali Al-Khater

Mr. Hamad Ali Al-Khater became Qatar Airways CEO on 7 December 2025. Before this role, he served as Chief Operating Officer of Hamad International Airport (HIA), where he oversaw airport operations and ensured safety and reliability. He also guided major strategic plans and the expansion of airport infrastructure during his role.

Prior to joining this Group, he held senior roles at QatarEnergy (the state-owned energy company), where his main roles were to engage in business development, strategic deals, and large-scale operational and strategic initiatives.

In his new CEO role, Mr. Al-Khater will now be responsible for leading one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious airlines.

Next Steps for Qatar Airways Group

Despite the change in leadership, Qatar Airways says it remains committed to delivering reliable, world-class service.

The Group Board of Directors Chairman, His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, said:

“With this leadership transition, Qatar Airways Group reaffirms its commitment to delivering world-class experiences, reliability, and innovation to travellers around the globe.”

As Al-Khater comes from HIA, where he managed daily operations and major expansion projects, he brings strong airport experience to his new role. Few airline CEOs have this level of hands-on airport knowledge.

This background could lead to:

  • Better coordination between the airport and airline
  • A smoother experience for passengers
  • Stronger planning for future growth

For Doha, this may create a more efficient and seamless hub, helping the city rise even higher in global rankings.
