American Airlines announced it will be changing its carry-on baggage policies. The airline will be removing bag sizers from its gates across the country, according to a statement made to Nexstar’s KTLA.

Carry-on baggage policies update

The airline is modifying one of its regulations in an effort to expedite the boarding procedure. Although the size of a carry-on bag will no longer be checked before boarding the airline, this should not be used as an excuse to bring bigger luggage.

“Team members will continue to monitor carry-on baggage in the lobby and at the gate, and oversized items will still be required to be checked in ahead of the flight,” the airline said.

American Airlines allows passengers to bring one personal item and one carry-on piece of luggage. The passenger’s personal bag must not be larger than 18 x 14 x 8 inches and must fit beneath the seat in front of them. The carry-on can be placed in the overhead compartment or beneath the passenger seat in front. The total dimensions of the carry-on, including the wheels and handles, cannot be larger than 22 x 14 x 9 inches.

How it works

The update on the bag sizers comes one year after American Airlines announced other changes being made to its boarding process.

When a ticket is scanned during the boarding procedure, a staff member may determine which zone the individual should be in, and they will be warned if a customer boards too early. That way, if anyone tries to board the plane alongside the first-class and priority-boarding passengers, they will be routed to the back of the queue.

Staff will be able to clear the notification and allow passengers to board early if there is a valid reason.

According to View From the Wing, the airline tested the technology in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Tucson, Arizona; and Arlington, Virginia.
