Qantas Airways has officially ushered in a new era of aviation, as its first two Airbus A321XLR aircraft entered commercial service.

The move marks the beginning of the airline’s most ambitious fleet renewal program in history and cements its position as the first carrier in the Asia-Pacific region to operate the next-generation aircraft.

Qantas’ Next-Generation Travel Experience

The two A321XLRs’ Great Ocean Road (VH-OGA) and Outback Way (VH-OGB) took off this morning, September 25, on their debut flights. While the Great Ocean Road stretched its wings on the busy Sydney-Melbourne route, the Outback Way operated on the longer Sydney-Perth service.

Qantas is the fourth airline to launch the A321XLR globally. Compared with the airline’s Boeing 737s, the Airbus A321XLR offers higher ceilings, a longer and wider cabin, space for about 60 per cent more carry-on bags and larger windows.

In a first for its domestic flights, passengers will also be offered fast, free Wi-Fi and wider seats.

The A321XLR delivers 13 per cent more capacity than the 737-800 without compromising legroom as the aircraft will have 197 seats in total, including 177 in Economy and 20 in Business Class.

Qantas’ Step Toward Greener Skies

Beyond comfort and operational efficiency, the Airbus A321XLR brings significant environmental benefits. Powered by Pratt & Whitney’s geared turbofan engines, the aircraft consumes less fuel per seat than the Boeing 737, which contributes to a reduction in carbon emissions.

To further improve fuel efficiency, the aircraft has incorporated advanced lightweight materials and aerodynamic design features.

The Airbus A321XLR’s long-range capabilities (up to 8,700 kilometres) expand the airlines’ ability to operate non-stop flight services on routes that previously required stopovers or larger widebody planes. This will allow the airline to target Southeast Asian markets and beyond with lower environmental impact and greater flexibility.

“Investing in next-generation aircraft is the most significant way we can elevate the travel experience for our customers while reducing emission,” stated Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson.

Expanding the Future Fleet With 20 A321XLR

With seven aircraft joining the fleet by June 2026, Qantas expects to receive its third A321XLR in November 2025.

16 of the 20 A321XLR of the airlines’ additional orders are set to feature lie-flat Business seats to service medium-haul international and longer transcontinental routes. This new order brings the airline’s order for the type to 48 aircraft.
