Vietjet Air, Vietnam’s largest private airline, has undertaken a landmark agreement at the Paris Air Show on June 17 2025. The airline signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for 100 A321neo aircraft, with an option for 50 more. In line with their growth strategy, this fleet expansion signifies Vietjet’s ambitions in the region, alignment with robust growth in Vietnam, and a commitment to a modernising the operational efficiency of its aircraft.

Vietjet’s Growth and Strategic Expansion

The aviation market in Vietnam has grown by 7.5% annually. Vietjet already owns 100 Airbus aircraft, and the A321neo fleet expansion, coupled with a recent commitment to even more A330neos, supports Vietjet’s ambition to transform Vietnam into a regional aviation hub.

The airline’s Chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, said:

“This new agreement marks a significant milestone in our strategic partnership with Airbus. These modern and efficient aircraft have been instrumental in Vietjet’s growth, helping us make air travel more accessible and affordable for millions, while strengthening our role as a connector for economic development, cultural exchange and global connectivity. This landmark agreement represents a vital step in Vietjet’s growth strategy as a multi-national aviation group.”

The fleet expansion alognside Vietjet’s growth strategy with affiliates like Thai Vietjet positions the airline well for expansion and integration into the competitive aviation market.

Economic Implications & Tariff Dynamics

The agreement, with an estimated value of $9.4 billion per Cirium Ascend estimates, highlights a confidence inline with Vietnam’s booming GDP growth. U.S. tariff pressures on Vietnam, however, do complicate things given the South-East Asian nation’s reliance on exports, now urged to purchase more American goods. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s advocacy for a return to a 1979 zero-tariff agreement signals hope for a tariff-free trade environment, which could ease costs for Vietjet. Additionally, this deal strengthens Airbus’s dominance in Vietnam, where it already supplies 86% of commercial jets, particularly in the wake of Boeing’s subdued presence due to recent safety concerns.

Environmental Impact & Sustainability

The A321neo aircraft are fundamental to Vietjet’s efforts into sustainability. It offers a 20% reduction in fuel savings and CO2 emissions compared to prior generations. It also cuts noise by 50% and can operate with 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with hopes for 100% SAF by 2030. These improvements enhance the operational efficiency of Vietjet aircraft while committing itself to environmental and sustainability goals within the region and the airline.

Vietjet’s MoU with Airbus for up to 150 A321neo aircraft marks a pivotal step in the growth strategy for the airline. Capitalising on economic success in Vietnam to further sustainability goals and sidestep troublesome international tariffs, the airline’s ambitious trajectory speaks to a confidence and consciousness within the company.
