On Feb. 17, 2025, Delta Flight 4819 took off from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport for Toronto Pearson International Airport, Canada. According to a Delta statement, the aircraft crashed at the Toronto airport at 2:15 p.m. ET on Monday after flipping upside down moments before landing.

What causes a plane to flip over?

In the recorded exchanges between the aircraft and air traffic control, there was never an indication that the landing would be problematic. Former pilot Marco Chan and plane crash investigator Ismo Aaltonen attest to this. According to Mr. Chan, the plane seemed to have landed hard with an abnormally rapid rate of descent. Mr. Chan told the BBC that the aircraft appears to have landed with one wheel first, which could have led to the landing gear collapsing upon contact. The plane may have rolled due to the right-wing colliding with the runway.

The weather might have been another factor. The weather in Toronto was harsh and cold. Temperatures fell well below freezing to about 17 degrees Fahrenheit, while winds gusted up to 37 miles per hour. At the time of the collision, visibility was just six miles, according to meteorologists. The incident happened on a windy day after a lot of snowfall. However, Todd Aitken, the fire chief at Toronto International Airport, stated that there were no crosswinds when the Delta plane arrived and the runway was dry at the time of the collision. Delta CEO Ed Bastian told “CBS Mornings’’ that the flight crew was a seasoned bunch, used to the harsh winter conditions in Toronto.

In conclusion, the Delta Flight 4819 incident highlights how erratic air travel can be and how crucial safety precautions are.
